Art Equals Happiness and Health

Art = Happiness & Healthiness

Picasso once said, "Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life." This is so true. Experts have proven that creating art can lower stress levels and leave people feeling more mentally clear and calm. Don't you feel more positive when you've spent some time painting or just playing with some new art materials? Here are some facts about how making art makes us a happier and healthier person.

PROVIDES A DISTRACTION

It is said that the average person has about seventy thousand thoughts a day.  That’s a lot of thinking! I can so relate because I have a hard time shutting my brain off. Through our creative efforts, our mind goes in “the zone” or wanders, giving our minds a break and pushes aside all our worries.

ENCOURAGES PROBLEM SOLVING AND BRAIN HEALTH

Creative thinking helps us find new ways to problem solve.  Out-of-the-box thinking stimulates the brain to grow new neurons which is the brain’s information messenger.  These neurons help increase our mental fitness and health.

BOOST SELF-ESTEEM

After completing a favorite painting, we will sometimes give it as a gift, display it in our home, or post it on social media, which makes us feel good.  By doing this, it often increases the pleasure chemical called “neurotransmitter dopamine”. Dopamine can also increase our focus, concentration and boost our motivation or drive.  It makes us feel so much better and happier.

ART HEALS

Art can help us overcome difficulties, such as coping with pain and negative feelings.  Through art, we express ourselves and make connections to the world around us.  It can be a way to communicate how we are feeling from being joyous to feeling depressed and therefore therapeutic.

These are just a few facts showing us how being a creative person has numerous health benefits, so keep on doing what you’re doing.  Keep on creating and making our world a better place!!
